Weekend Fun: Juicy Fruit
| August 6, 2010 | Posted by Linsi Brownson under Body, cocktails, cooking, food, Inspiration, Projects, weekend fun |
A few weeks ago my husband called on his way home from work and told me he got me a present. I love presents so he basically could have brought me pet rock and I would have loved it. But what he walked in the door with was much better: it was a 20 lb industrial juicer (I think from the 70′s). His client had purchased it years ago and gotten bored before she even got started so it sat unloved until she decided to demo her kitchen.
I’ve been pining for a juicer ever since one late night when I got sucked into a Jack Lalanne infomercial. And now…I’m gonna have so much fun! This thing has an industrial motor that could power a golf cart and it’s solid metal. They just don’t make things like they used to.
So after a good scrubbin’ (it did collect dust for a couple decades) I’m all set to juice away. First things first, I need to find some great recipes. Here’s what I’ll be drinking this weekend.
Celery with Carrot and Apple – Sounds sweet, plus celery is great for detoxifying and re-hydrating and it lowers blood pressure
4 stalks celery
2 large carrots
1 peeled and cored apple
recipe from www.rawfoods-livingfoods.com
Orange, Cucumber and Ginger- for Glowing Skin
1 orange
1 cucumber
1/2 ginger root
Anti-Headache Juice
3 carrots
2 celery stalks
handful of spinach
1/2 ginger root
I can’t wait to get started. If you have any recipes to share or have experience with juicing let me know. Happy weekend!
Inspired By…How to Cook Your Life
| August 4, 2010 | Posted by Linsi Brownson under Body, film, food, Inspiration |
I am a bit behind the times but I recently saw one of those movies that touched me in a way that few do. I also realized, roughly about the same time, that I don’t pay nearly enough attention to food here at Inspired Design Daily – which is a shame because I love it… a lot.
The film is called How To Cook Your Life, with Zen Master and Chef Edward Espe Brown. He has a personality that is human and relatable, and his message in cooking is to bond with your food; from understanding it’s origins to the meaning of food in culture and life. This is a hot topic right now, especially with films like Food, Inc. and Super Size me and the BBC Show Hugh’s Chicken Run. Here’s a preview:
This movie is interesting, funny and inspiring for all walks of life. It’s on dvd now and recently been airing again on the Sundance Channel.
Inspired Thoughts
| August 3, 2010 | Posted by Linsi Brownson under Inspiration, inspired thoughts, redefine home |
I have known for a very long time that I was passionate (also referred to as crazy) about design and that I somehow needed to make it my career. I’ve taken the long route, exploring many different forms of art and design and every experience has been wonderful…but it never became much of a career. Until now.
The decision to open a retail store was made without hesitation despite a whole world of question marks that lay before me. I had literally no idea what I was doing when it all began, and that’s not to say that I have much of a clue now either. But every problem I’ve been faced with, every decision to be made, has been solved and decided and somehow I have continued to move forward with no more than a pause or a glance at the doubt in the corner of my mind. This force that drives me is indescribable – I don’t understand and I certainly don’t question it. I see my future, it’s still a hazy picture but every day it comes a bit more into focus.
I was truly meant for this.
The proof is in the fact that our little business is growing by the day. It’s weird to call it a business because it doesn’t feel like work. Sure, I work all the time. Pretty much every moment that I’m not sleeping or obligated to be somewhere else. But it still seems like something I do to pass the time. My ‘job’ isn’t glamorous; I spend most of my day at the computer, making phone calls (which I am allergic to), coordinating, processing, shipping and problem-solving. I don’t get enough creative time. I certainly don’t get to go to the beach…yet anyway. But my customers are lovely, my reps are helpful, my friends and family and brief acquaintances are supportive and I am in love with what I am doing.
This month’s inspired thought is completely appropriate for someone like me – or you- who has, is or wants to start a business doing what they love.
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.”

Something Old, Something New
| August 2, 2010 | Posted by Linsi Brownson under accessories, Flea Market, found objects, lighting, redefine home, weekly favorites |
I love finding unique, vintage and just plain weird things when I’m traveling or out shopping flea markets, but one thing that I always have to stop and think about is how it can be worked into a more modern decor…naturally. The new to old ratio of 3:1 seems to work well to make a home feel comfortably worn but not overly stuffy and museum-like. This also gives room for buying larger or more, ahem, eye-catching pieces that will stand out amongst the crowd of new or modern.
A great book for some inspiration is one called Flea Market Style, which I covered in a post back in September. Click here to read.
All this inspired me to showcase a mix of old and new items for our Weekly Favorites at Redefine Home. See if you can guess which is which…
