Edible Thursday: Make, Grow, Eat

Last weekend I went on an adventure to Culver City to check out the Eat Real Festival.  As you may recall from my previous post Eat Real in L.A. I was pretty excited about gig.

Between walking, consuming and cooing over the farm animals…

I also learned that it’s pretty easy to make some funky food in your own home.  Like growing these crazy mushrooms in a box.

The Mushroom Kit

I just love this idea – not only do they look cool but it makes this somewhat daunting garden item easy and fun.  TheMushroomKit.com

Or try brewing a batch of Kombucha tea.  It’s perfect for a hot summer day and is chock full of good-for-your-gut stuff.

Kombucha Kamp

If you’re SoCal local, check out proprietor Hannah’s Kombucha Kamp.  If you live further away, you can learn all you would ever want to know about kombucha (and more) and purchase your own kit online at KombuchaKamp.com

Other favorites of the show:

Orgasmo de la Boca (yep, you read that right) – smoked olives

Backyard In a Jar – delicious preserves like basil, peach habanero and tapas.  I loved that this booth was in a vintage VW bus!

Homeboy Bakery – Breads and other deliciousness made by at-risk youth

Inspired Life: Breaking Nails and Bad Habits

While on an adventure the other day, my friend poutily announced that she had broken a nail.  “This is going to bug me all day,” she said.  But then she said “You know, I used to have a bad habit of biting my nails, but I haven’t been able to since I got braces…and I’ve realized how gross it is.  I don’t think I’ll ever do it again.”

My friend was forced into breaking a bad habit and it didn’t take long for her to decide that, despite its inconveniences (like not being able to ‘fix’ a nail on the go) she was better off.

Breaking Bad Habits

So I’ve been thinking about bad habits, big and small, and what it does to us when we break them – even if we eventually do it again.  We tend to do so many things that aren’t great for us but  feel like we can’t stop.  Almost every emotion that goes along with a bad habit is negative – vs when we do something nice for ourselves (even the smallest thing) we feel invigorated, in control, and generally optimistic about our futures.  Funny, right?

So my challenge this week is to pick a bad habit to break, just to see that you can do it.  You may not be able to swear it off for life, but I can promise it will make you feel better and that’s usually motivation to keep going.

I’m going to go to bed on time – not two hours later than I want to.  My problem is that no matter what time I go to sleep I always wake up at the same time.  So my recent night owl habit has me growling in the morning and makes for less productive, more cranky days.  Until bedtime, of course.  That’s when I suddenly snap out of it and want to play.  Not the best routine.  So last night, in preparation for my post, I tucked in at my chosen time and today I’m feeling like maybe, just maybe, I can get a handle on this in a few days.

So what’s your bad habit?

In Rainbows

Radiohead’s In Rainbows album is one of my favorites, and seems to fit particularly well with my mood lately. So do these less cheerful rainbow inspired interiors.

Technicolor Art in Bedroom

I love the dramatic black, grey and white palette with just a pop of those technicolor prints.  They remind me of bug eyes.

Rainbow Woven Blanket in Bedroom

Again the lack of color is the perfect canvas for this multi-hued blanket.

Woven Rug Chair

There is so much texture in this space, but the perfect amount of color.

Books Organized by Color

Black floors, white furniture, color coordinated books – I’m in heaven, even with my bad mood!

Eat Real in L.A.

Attention foodies, gardeners and SoCal locals: this weekend is an awesome event called Eat Real Fest in Culver City.

Los Angeles Eat Real Festival 2011

The event boasts a few of my favorite activities – eating, making and growing.  The food and drinks are local, sustainable and lovingly crafted by passionate people.  You can get your hands dirty with the backyard farmers and learn how to garden on your patio, raise chickens in the city, and make some funky food to take home.

If you’re local, come join the fun.  It’s a free event that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy on the inside (and not just from the handcrafted beer). For everyone else, you should check out the website and see how you can get involved in a local food movement.

I’m excited about this event because it’s got a fun vibe and plenty of sponsors to make a big fuss about it.  What that boils down to is the ability to make a large impact, which is what we really need.  If more of these events happened all over the US, we’d be a happier, healthier country.  And I’m all for that, aren’t you?

Art-Inspired Fashion

Hello everyone, it’s Nicole from smartmouthblog and lately I’m finding myself inspired by art. I found this visual gem below via blogger The Jealous Curator. The artist Olaf Hajek creates stunning illustrations using color palettes from my dreams.

I particularly liked this illustration which, although beautiful, had a creepy-crawly vibe with the beetle and centipede. So, since I’ve recently found my calling in wardrobe curation, I decided to create an outfit based on his work.
