All About Orange

Yesterday we hit the Melrose Trading Post, a cool flea market at Melrose/Fairfax in LA, happening every Sunday.  Loaded with vintage jewelry and clothing, but I was really feelin’ the art at this one.  David grabbed a cool old photo of San Francisco and we picked up some 100 year old prints of creepy creatures that are really fun (to be saved for another blog post).  My favorite find, though, was this collection of hand-printed pages from a book of short stories in the 30′s.  The graphics are so simple and I just love the two-tone, eye grabbing orange!

These totally got me in the mood for orange, so my favorite picks this week are all about orange.

Favorite Finds under $20

I don’t know about you, but I love finding cool things that aren’t expensive.  You know, the kind of thing where you think “Wow, I would like that anyway, BUT NOW….!”  I do a lot of  ‘shopping’  for the store these days, so I get more opportunities than ever to stumble upon things like this and the happy feelings that go along with it.  So this week I decided to pick out some of my favorite things under $20 and give them a little love here on the blog.   And  since I love them, I’m sure you will too (what an assumption!) and so I’m doing free shipping all week on these faves at Redefine Home.  Just enter coupon code SHIP20 during checkout.

All About Industry

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and, for those of us in the U.S., I hope you are recovering well from the holiday weekend.  This week I wanted to share some of my favorite vintage and industry-inspired pieces.

Look familiar?  This is the Shop Table, featured here before, during and after it’s restoration.  This gem was picked up by David on ebay and he spent weeks refinishing.  This is one of my favorite pieces because the base is so smooth and simple, and pretty, and the top is rough and worn (in a good way) and they really compliment each other.

The Antique Tin Cups have so many beautiful details that you have to just keep looking at them.  The pounded tin just keeps twisting in different directions and the patina has so many variations in color.

Dear Mr. Edison, thank you for the invention of the lightbulb, and this lovely lamp.  This is a reproduction (obviously) but it has the simple qualities of the original – and it’s made of a sustainable wood.

The Luddite Beaker is inspired by a movement that happened during the Industrial Revolution when craftsman got fed up with machines taking their jobs.  I find this ‘beaker’ funny and cool and it would fit right into my kitchen next to my Poison goblets.

A perfect compliment to the shop table, these Shop Stools were salvaged from a warehouse in India.  They have definitely gotten good use but they still have lots of life in them.  They still swivel like the best of them and I happen to think the rust looks nice.

Happy Monday everyone!

A little bit of History

Well, this week it’s time to wrap up another month and head forward to some true summer fun.  With Independence Day to look forward to this weekend, I was feeling a bit nostalgic for my childhood summers at our lake cabin and being around friends, family and neighbors.  Instead of going red, white and blue, I thought this week at Redefine Home I would feature something a bit more representative of life through our nation’s history.   The simpler times (I wonder if people would have agreed with that term…simple).

linen is known as an eco-friendly material now, but used to just be a way of life

blueprints from the tallest lighthouse in the nation, Cape Hatteras, an icon of North Carolina

beautiful in its simplicity

Edison’s invention changed history, but now we like it ‘cuz it’s pretty.  And the cage lamp meant safety first, no more workshop fires.

Iconic art from the seafaring days shows up on a cool, oversized tray – this was not done with whale bone, good thing,  but it sure does look cool and would make a splash (I couldn’t help it) at your bbq this weekend!

Shiny New Things

It’s a little gloomy here, so this week at Redefine Home I wanted to feature some of our shinier, happier decor.  Check ‘em out, Mmmm shiny…

This is a gorgeous, handcrafted metal base with either marble or a green glass top.  Seriously luxurious and it fits pretty much anywhere.

This is the Quad Clock and the picture doesn’t do it justice because it’s huge!  Not ridiculously huge, but bigger than you would think at almost 16″ square.  It’s sturdy and really well made and, of course, shiny.  I love this thing.

Also featured last week (see post on Relight) this soy based candle was hand-poured into a vintage glass by LA Artist BJ Papas.  It’s totally eco-friendly and the best part is that you can still use the glass when the candle is gone.

One of my favorite items in the store, these are repurposed beer bottles that have been ‘antiqued.’  These look awesome anywhere you put them – in a table setting, on the patio or in a collection of varying candles, and the glow is mesmerizing.

Okay, so it’s not shiny but it is glossy and the textural quality of the print is worthy of some notice.  I love this tray because it is simple and bold at the same time.  Gotta love that Thomas Paul!

So this is what’s on my mind this week.  You can check these out in our What’s New section at Redefine Home and save 10% on any of these items when you enter code NEW10 during checkout this week.  Happy Monday!
