Now, I don’t usually make a big thing of my Birthday (or anyone else’s for that matter), but this year is different. Because I’m turning 30 tomorrow and it means a lot!
Since I’ve never been 30, I’m only relying on my lovely pals who beat me to it, and their experiences with it. So it could be a bunch of BS (like Mom’s saying labor didn’t hurt that much), but my friends are a pretty great bunch of ladies so I’m inclined to believe them. They say it’s AWESOME and I am on board with awesome.
3 Reasons I’m stoked for my Birthday:
1. I’m entering a new phase in my life – this isn’t about getting older (though I am)
It’s about stepping up and owning who you are.
I’m more comfortable with making decisions, good or bad, because they are mine to make. I am responsible for what happens in my life – my body, my relationships, my career. I own that.
2. I’ll be at the spa all day tomorrow with my girlies
This will be us – lounging in plushy robes, getting massages, drinking cucumber water, relaxing in the steam room….DELIGHTFUL
I will even forgive that decor…because it’s my birthday…
3. Spa Day is followed by Foodie Night
We’ll be meeting up with our men for a fabulous dinner at the Nirvana Grille in Laguna Beach.
I WILL be wearing something sparkly and I WILL be drinking Champagne. How’s that for a good start?
Have yourself a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you next week – with fewer wrinkles and a big happy smile. Peace.
You know it’s coming…

A New Year’s post!
But what kind of a visual artist would I be if I didn’t get all worked up about the shiny, bubbly decor that surrounds our latest holiday? That’s right, I would be just a lame if I ignored the fact that I obviously love me a holiday party.
So, at the risk of this seeming like a cliche, easy post (which it is, and is), here is some New Year’s eye candy from my Pinterest board Holiday Magic.
Get the party started right with a New Years kit (handmade, of course).

Green&Chic DIY: Come On Baby, Light My (Recycled) Fire

I have many fond childhood memories of sitting by the fire on a cold winter’s night. We had a fantastically huge fireplace that took up the whole wall and it had a stone hearth that I loved sitting on to watch the embers glow. I remember one year my parents bought pine cone fire starters that turned the flames different colors. They would toss one in and my sisters and I would watch in amazement as the orange flames turned green, red and blue.

"A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body. " Benjamin Franklin
Winters with a fireplace just seem magical to me and the smell of burning wood always makes me feel cozy and warm inside. I can think of no better way to spend an evening than by the fire with a good book, a good friend, or a good (and boozy) drink. Possibly the only way to top it off would be to listen to this on surround sound while the crackling fire laps at my toes and I lap my drink.
I haven’t had a wood burning fireplace in a number of years, and thanks to a friend, I have recently had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with the art of indoor fire making. Let me begin by saying that fires, while beautiful in their amber majesty, are not always an easy thing to conjure up. I have spent hours trying to get one going, and even with the help of other people I still cannot manage to keep it burning for more than a few minutes. I decided that expensive store-bought fire starters are out of the question so I took a cue from my childhood days and decided to look into making my own fire starters made from materials easily found around the house.
There are a range of ideas and materials to use, but I chose to stick with the ones that included things I have in abundance: pine cones, shredded paper, and wax. Just these three things alone will reward you with a roaring fire and a lovely smelling house that just begs for guests to entertain. To keep things even greener (and cheaper) recycle your candle stubs and leftover wax rather than buying new. Jar candles can be placed in the freezer for a few hours to harden the wax. With just a gentle nudge, it should come loose without much of a problem. Votive and taper nubs can be tossed into a old metal pot or crock pot and melted down (just be sure to remove any debris, metal or old wicks before using).

These cute and practical fire starters are easy to assemble and pack quite a punch, using cedar chips, recycled wax, and paper cupcake tin liners. Native Americans have used cedar in ceremonies and sweat lodges for centuries for it's protective and purification properties, and to banish bad dreams.

These natural pine cone fire starters are beautiful in their simplicity. Using a white wax helps further enforce the connection to the stark and monochrome palette of winter. Adding essential oils to the wax creates a beautiful scent that will not offend even the most sensitive nose.

Pine needles can be found almost anywhere and they make a great kindling for starting fires. Simply collect a grocery bag of dry (but still green) needles, round up some non-styrofoam egg cartons and melt down some left over wax and you have all of the supplies necessary to make these 100% recycled fire starters. They're compact enough to be packed for a camping trip and give off the cheery aroma of pine when burned.

These DIY fire starters make great hostess and housewarming gifts. I recently read a wedding blog post where the bride and groom gave them as favors in place of the usual candy box or other traditional trinket. They also make a stunning table centerpiece and can be handed out to guests as they depart for the evening.
You can also DIY your own colored fire starters. Easy to find substances such as allum (used for making canned pickles), borax, and table salt give your flames a hint of color and brings everyone around the fire to see the show. This is particularly fun for kids and those who have a penchant for science or chemistry. You can separate them based on their colors or just throw a few different varieties into the fireplace and see what happens.
As always, practice safety first and never leave children around a fire unsupervised. Nothing ruins a party quite like spilled milk a trip to the emergency room.
Happy Crafting!

Holiday For Real
| December 22, 2011 | Posted by Linsi Brownson under Celebrate, holidays, Seasonal |
I’m not sure about you, but I’ve pretty much checked out this past week. I’m busy as ever trying to make final holiday plans and squeeze in as many clients as possible before the end of the year…but I gotta confess I’m just kind of spinning in circles these days.
All I want for Christmas is a mental vacation!
I have so many ‘plans’ for the New Year and I want to start it off right by being organized and not feeling overwhelmed. But I’m not sure that all this overtime is going to get me there.
I think it’s time to call it a week, and maybe a year – we’ll see. In the meantime, I’ll still be posting fun stuff on Facebook and Pinterest so if you miss me you can come say hello
So here’s wishing you a very Happy Holiday – I’ll be celebrating this weekend by going to see A Christmas Carol (one of my favorites, and hopefully the start of a fun family tradition).
Hope your holiday is filled with smiling faces and happy thoughts, and that you get to share it with the people you love. See you soon!
Green&Chic: Last-Minute Homemade Gifts (Right From The Pantry)
| December 14, 2011 | Posted by Elissa C. under bathroom, cleaning, cooking, Create, do-it-yourself, Eat, food, gifts, Guest Bloggers, holidays, Home, Inspiration, kitchen, Projects, Seasonal, Sustainable Living |
Every year during the holidays, I find myself needing a last-minute gift for a thoughtful co-worker or neighbor who has graced me with something special. My circle of family and friends is rather small, which makes things easier when it comes to my end of things, but it is inevitable that I will receive a gift from someone that I wasn’t expecting. I really enjoy giving to people, so I always have a backup plan just in case. Most of the time it is of the homemade variety.
I like to give homemade gifts because they allow me to express my appreciation in a creative way. While I am in the process of making, I get to concentrate on the recipient and kind of imbue the gift with a little extra love. I am giving them my attention and time (and blood, sweat and tears, depending on what I’m making). I also like to give something that can be shared with others, which is why I try to include a recipe or instructions on how to make it. For me, it really all is about sharing. Me sharing my energy by making and giving, and then hopefully passing the experience along.
I like to make edible gifts, but with the proliferation of fudge, cookies and cakes floating around the office at Christmas I think it’s nice to offer a little variety and mix it up with some savory snacks. This also helps balance out a workplace sugar coma. Below are links to a few homemade food items, including a delicious spicy nut mix that can be made well in advance.
Even some edible ingredients can be used to make pampering gifts. Brown sugar and honey can be mixed together to make a hydrating and exfoliating sugar scrub. Another great idea is making a natural countertop cleaner with just water, vinegar, a little dish detergent and some essential oils. Most craft stores carry spray bottles, or you can order them online. Add a custom label with ingredients (and amounts) and it becomes the gift that keeps on giving.
Try your hand at some of these easy last-minute gift ideas. Many of the ingredients and supplies are probably already in your kitchen. You could also invite some friends over for a gift-making party. Choose one or two ideas, have everyone bring an item on the supply list, and enjoy a glass of wine and A Christmas Story on the DVD player. Actually, if Ralphie had given his teacher one of these gifts instead of a fruit basket, he just might have gotten an A+ on his essay.
Get creative and use favorite recipes to create original gifts of your own. Your friends are sure to enjoy receiving them as much as you enjoyed making them.
Happy Gifting!

Homemade Vinaigrette
(Recipe)

This homemade vinaigrette is a great gift for anyone on your list. This tangy dressing can be used traditionally (on a salad) or as a marinade for tofu or fish. It contains no artificial flavors, sugar or preservatives and can last in the fridge for up to a week. The main ingredients are olive oil, salt and pepper, which are found in most every kitchen. Assembly is easy and when done in mass batches, you could have enough gifts to cover everyone on your list.

BBQ Dry Rub For Grilled Veggies or Meat
(Recipe)

Does anyone ever know what type of gift to give to a guy? Sure, you could just run out and buy some electronic gadget thingy (or a gift card — LAME!), but he probably has at least a dozen similar man items that just sit around collecting dust. That’s where this amazing BBQ dry rub comes into play. It is suited for grilling vegetables or white meat, and if you don’t live in Alabama like me (which is great for cold-weather grilling) it is versatile enough to transfer to the oven. I always like to write the ingredients on the label so it can be made again. Add a package of bamboo skewers and a basting brush and you’ve got a ready-made gift (and probably dinner).

Chipotle and Rosemary Spiced Nuts by Ina Garten
(Recipe)

This amazing recipe comes by way of uber-chef, Ina Garten. She is the queen of delicious and anyone who receives this spicy snack will thank you (and probably ask for the recipe, so be a dear and include it). This gift is good for anyone and is a welcome change from the usual holiday party suspects like Chex Mix and cheese balls . Paired with a six pack of craft beer or luscious wine, and you have an instant party! These can be boxed or bagged and they also travel well, making them perfect for giving to your friends who will be traveling over the holidays.

All-Natural Household Cleaners
(Directions)

I have been a fan of natural and vegetable-based cleaners for quite a while. Sometimes simple really is better, and the smell of this natural grime-buster can't be beat. It's safe around children and pets, making it the perfect gift for anyone who has recently moved, had a baby or just happens to be a cleaning freak. Perhaps I'll make some for my husband. You could add a few cotton towels and print custom labels for the bottles, then box it all up for the perfect housewarming gift. How thoughtful!

Homemade Sugar Body Scrub
(Directions)

I saved the best for last. I have been making sugar scrubs for years and everyone who I have given them to has just flipped. I prefer making to purchasing because it is less expensive, more fun, and you can blend ingredients based on your friends' skin types for a truly custom gift. You can use salt, oatmeal, white sugar or brown sugar, and a variety of carrier essential oils. Avoid using mineral oil or vegetable oil (as used in cooking). These are not aromatherapy grade oils and I would not recommend that these be applied to the skin. Check out www.aromaweb.com for more information on carrier and essential oils. Oh, and be sure to make extra. After you've seen the results you're going to want some for yourself.
